Concept confusion

Taught a class on N.Y. law of protecting screenplay concepts.  A leading case,  Nadel v. Play-by-Play is a federal case interpreting N.Y. state law,  and references a legal test for an idea's novelty: novelty to the buyer.  A subsequent N.Y. state case calls Nadel opinion wrong in this point.  QUESTION: in a federal case brought now,  which opinion would control?
